Wolf Parable

An elder Apache was teaching his grandchildren about life.

He said to them,”A fight is going on inside me; it is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One wolf represents fear, anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, competition, superiority, and ego. The other stands for joy, peace, love, hope, sharing, serenity, humility, kindness, friendship, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. This same fight is going on inside you, and inside every other person too.”

They thought about it for a minute and then one child asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?”

The old Grandpa simply replied, “The one you feed.

The AA Promises

THE PROMISES

If we are painstaking about this phase of our development, we will be amazed before we are half way through.

  • We are going to know a new freedom and a new happiness. We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it.
  • We will comprehend the word serenity and we will know peace.
  • No matter how far down the scale we have gone, we will see how our experience can benefit others.
  • That feeling of uselessness and self-pity will disappear.
  • We will lose interest in selfish things and gain interest in our fellows.
  • Self-seeking will slip away.
  • Our whole attitude and outlook upon life will change.
  • Fear of people and of economic insecurity will leave us.
  • We will intuitively know how to handle situations which used to baffle us.
  • We will suddenly realize that God is doing for us what we could not do for ourselves.

Are these extravagant promises? We think not. They are being fulfilled among us—sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly. The will always materialize if we work for them.

This website is about recovery – not making money – but it wouldn’t hurt to pay a few web hosting charges if you  decided to visit one of the sponsors ads… I have kept outside ads to a minimum so it’s not so frustrating to read. Hate those pages with an ad between every paragraph.

Have a great One Day at a Time! Dean 🙂

  1. Thank you for these pointers, websites, and quotes. I am doing the workbook for co-dependent no more. I believe I was born that way. The website you have is listed in her material. Thank you for sharing your information. Peace mw

  2. Thanks once again. I am hoping that independence work will help, I also am in recovery and am pretty much a home body but like it. Hopefully I will get out even more. Seems being healthier, and aware made it so evident. I had a lot of family members pass, and a few friends, and got I’ll from hair chemicals, I sorta froze, and also at times have guilt. Thanks and peace

  3. Working out of the codependent no more work book, and she suggested your site for slogans, looks like I will be using this in my program as well! Thanks a bunch!

  4. I feel truly grateful for coming across your web site, it created a inner smile (& outer one) the whole time i was reading the beautiful quotes. I have never felt more understood in my whole life as I do today and that is all thanks to people like you who freely spread the message of recovery to me, and to millions of other addicts.
    God Bless
    Julie

  5. If God is really rlaiteve in the way we understand him and not an absolute constant being for all .then all of our talk about god is just idle chatter about our thoughts and not about an actual Divine Being. Freedom to create our own understanding makes us the creator and the thought about Him becomes our creation. Hmm. Wouldn’t that make us the god of that creation? So we surrender our lives over to ourselves.

  6. If one person beevlies that we are created from the dust in God’s likeness and another person beevlies we are assembled by a creative intelligence, or evolved, they can’t all be true. Truth is singular and unique. The world can’t be both flat and spherical. One idea of the earth is true and the other is false. This would mean that the way we choose to understand Him may have nothing to do with the truth.

  7. ok so now someone tell me that aloochl doesnt numb people. everyone who drinks normally has no idea what aloochlics and recovering aloochlics go through. its such a huge part of society and it does actually annoy me. i cant accept it being in our society because it causes too much pain and death for over half the population. its a drug and its SO EASY ACCESIBLE

  8. A 12-Step Meeting is a closed mitneeg of the religious organization, Alcoholics Anonymous. To attend a person must do what is called identify as an alcoholic, which is to say preface every single thing that they say at any Alcoholics Anonymous mitneeg with I am John Doe, and I am an alcoholic. During a 12-step Meeting portions of the Alcoholics Anonymous text The Twelve Steps and the Twelve Traditions are read. Usually members then speak about what they think the portions read might actually mean. The longer term members of Alcoholics Anonymous will usually give little mini-lectures about how Alcoholics Anonymous members are expected to interpret the text.Similarly, a Big Book Meeting is a closed mitneeg of the religious organization Alcoholics Anonymous. To attend a person must do what is called identify as an alcoholic, which is to say preface every single thing that they say at the mitneeg with I am John Doe, and I am an alcoholic. During a Big Book Meeting portions of the Alcoholics Anonymous text Alcoholics Anonymous (colloquially known as The Big Book ) are read. Usually members then speak about what they think the portions read might actually mean. The longer term members of Alcoholics Anonymous will usually give little mini-lectures about how Alcoholics Anonymous members are expected to interpret the text.Generally, these mitneegs are not suggested for newcomers to Alcoholics Anonymous. They are reserved for those who have at least subsumed themselves to the religious dogma to the extent that they are comfortable with identifying themselves as alcoholics and they have told the other Alcoholics Anonymous members that they are willing to turn their lives and wills over to the care of God.These more intensive text centered mitneegs are meant to solidify the person’s entry into the inner, more knowing echelons of this religious organization.
