Addiction Counselor Certification

Addiction Counselor Certification

Addiction Counselor Certification Standardization:

  • Assures the public that certified alcohol and drug counselors have uniform professional standards and a minimum level of competence for quality service.
  • Gives professional recognition to alcohol and drug counselors through a process which examines and certifies their knowledge, skills and competence.
  • Assures an opportunity for alcohol and drug counselors to further their professional development and education in the field.
  • Works towards enabling certified alcohol and drug counselors to become eligible for reimbursement from health insurance organizations for the professional services that they provide.

The requirements for each category of certification include:

  • Experience in alcoholism and/or drug addiction counseling;
  • Training and education in the knowledge/skills base;
  • Supervised practical training and experience in both the functions, and the knowledge/skills based of alcoholism and/or drug addiction counseling, and of related areas.

Counselor competence is assured by:

  • Training in the Twelve Core Functions and global criteria
  • Three or more years of experience working directly with drug and alcohol clients. This experience must be supervised and documented
  • A signed statement agreeing to adhere to a professional code of ethics
  • Successful completion of a written examination set internationally by the IC&RC
  • Successful completion of an oral examination before trained evaluators using a case presentation method. The questions will pertain to the Twelve Core Functions. Scores on the CPM are based on the global criteria for each core function
  • Proof of ongoing professional development demonstrated by attending approved continuing education programs in order to maintain their certification

Certification is usually a voluntary process by the counselor who may then use the credential to obtain a licence from the local governing body, state or province.

This website is about recovery – not making money – but it wouldn’t hurt to pay a few web hosting charges if you  decided to visit one of the sponsors ads… I have kept outside ads to a minimum so it’s not so frustrating to read. Hate those pages with an ad between every paragraph.

Have a great One Day at a Time! Dean 🙂

  1. Wonderful story, reckoned we could cnmoibe a number of unrelated data, nonetheless seriously really worth taking a look, whoa did a single find out about Mid East has got a lot more problerms at the same time

  2. I read about the Addiction Counselor Certification information on your website today. I am an Adult Child of Alcoholic parents and am currently in an ACOA support group in my town. I have a desire to be an ACOA counselor in the near future during my retirement years. Would I be able to counsel ACOA clients with just the Addiction Counselor Certification, or would I need another type of certification? I would only counsel part-time in my retirement years, so am not interested in State licensure. Any information you can provide me and what I need to do to get certified would be appreciated.
